Artur Matuck, MFA, PhD

Artur Matuck has been teaching Visual Arts, Communications and Literature at the University of São Paulo since 1984. In São Paulo, Brazil, Europe, North America and Japan, he has worked as teacher, researcher, writer, visual artist, video producer, performer, designer of teleart events and interactive sites and more recently as a media philosopher and symposia coordinator.

Since 1977, Mr. Matuck has been delivering conferences and workshops worldwide on New Media Arts, Interactive Television, Telecommunication Arts, Performance Art, Computer-Generated Writing, Intellectual Property and related issues.

In 1990, he was awarded a prize in the video-art category from the São Paulo Art Critics Association. At the same year, he completed a comprehensive study on the history of video art and interactive television, which resulted in a doctoral thesis: "The Dialogical Potential of Television".

Since the late 80s he has been planning videocommunication and web-based multicultural exchanges between artists, researchers and individuals from different countries and cultures. During 1991, as research fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, he produced Reflux, a worldwide Telecommunication Arts project, considered to be a pioneer worldwide event to call for artistic collaborative networking.

In 1995, as postgraduate fellow at the University of Florida, he started to experiment with text reprocessing programming opening a whole new research project on e-writing formats and technologies. Landscript, a web-based tool for person-computer co-authored textual creation was selected to participate in the 25th edition of the Biennial International of São Paulo, in 2002, in the net-art category.

He is the creator of Semion – an international symbol for released information, a theoretical and conceptual contribution to the on-going debates on intellectual property rights and information dissemination in the electronic age.

From 2002 to 2006 he conceived and planned the international symposia Acta Media, on media arts and digital culture, at the University of São Paulo.

From July 2006 to June 2007, he was a Visiting Teacher at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM) pursuing a research on "The Emergence of the Electroscript".

Recently, he has started a new research project, entitled Auto-medianization that involves personal self-investigation through media technologies leading to pieces in a variety of media such as installation, design, graphics, video, performance and writing.

In Brazil, he is now preparing the sixth edition of the International Symposium Acta Media, on media arts and digital culture that will happen in June 2008, at the University of Sao Paulo, with the presence of international and Brazilian scholars.
